We are so excited to host a team of caring health professionals in Ocean View in June! They made an impact last year already, so we anticipate even more this year. Dawn, from Hilbre Doula, based in Denver, has sparked a volunteer doula program to care for the women in the local Cape Town government hospital.
One of the issues is that the government hospital offers no painkillers. Zero. Nada. Zilch.
Last year, Dawn taught alternative birthing positions to the midwives in the hospital. She brought along donated birthing tools which she was able to help implement. This sparked a desire to train local volunteers who wanted to be part of the beauty of childbirth within their local contexts.
This year, with a focus on pain management, Dawn has secured the donation of an Elle TENS unit from Ian Dinan and Gavin Williamson in the UK. TENS is a form of electrotherapy designed to help with pain relief.
Ian was already familiar with the hospital and with the community of Ocean View! Can you believe it? He was quick to respond to Dawn's request. We are so grateful to these men who generously donated to this cause and who actively make themselves part of the solution.
